So how can I make sure when I board at Grand Central that I’m in a car I can exit from in Pawling?

It is now 42 years later,and the FL-9’s are now in museums,and other dual mode locomotives,now ply the rails of Metro-North doing what diesels do best,transporting passengers to their destinations,metro-north which was created by the NY State legislature,after congress ordered,Conrail to divest themselves of commuter operations,the New York Metropolitan Transportation Authority,created the Metro-NOrth Railroad to take over the metropolitan region of the former Conrail operations,who had to pay the freight carrier for crew,engineers,and conductors,and trainmen,(ticket collectors.),now Metro-North runs the trains themselves,and also maintains the trains at the ex-NYCentral Harmon Shopps,at Croton,NY,on the Hudson line,all rolling stock,is mainteined there.including the new GE,genesis 2 dual mode locomotives.

As a former student of the Linden Hill High School,where education is paramount,every sunday I would leave my parents home,(either mom,ordad),and rush to take the D train,to 42nd St,and walk a few blocks to Grand Central Terminal,and meet all my great friends,who would be waiting on the platform,and all of us were by the train then the conductor would open the doors,to the train,and in front would be one of the huge eMD,FL-9 dual mode locomotives,and exactly 8:00,P.M.,the train would pull out on time,then we would slow down for the stop at 125th st.Then the engineer would tell the interested parties that they just started the engines and the train would be moving in diesel,and the train would arrive at Hawthorne,NY,at exactly 9:00,P.M.,where the school station wagon would be waiting,to transport all of the students back at school,and we would watch and see the now show on tv,and monday morning back to our schedule,I only wish I had stayed longer because that school was actually helping me.Thanks,and God bless.

I used to be a student at the Linden Hill High School,in Hawthorne,NY,and in those days,the Harlem line was all low platforms,no third rail,trains were either,Budd rail diesel cars,or trains pulled by RS-3 diesels,after the electric was uncoupled,form the train,or pulled by the Ex-New Haven FL-9 dual mode locomotives,the train would pull out of Grand Central Terminal,in electric mode,then the engineer,would use the dual mode transfer switch,and leave North White Plains in diesel mode,there would be a few feet of 3rd rail after the grade crossing,than end.And at Valhalla,the train would go to Chatham,in full diesel mode.I of course would detrain at Hawthorne,and the school would dispatch it’s 2 station wagons,to meet the train,and bring a whole load of students,back to the best school,God ever created.What a great trip.

I have to say that this is really interesting! As I used to take the train out of what was then Brewster North when I was younger (I now live in Northern NY, but still on occasion ride the Harlem Line), a lot of this still rings quite the bell. On many Amtrak trains, you have to move to a different car when getting off the train, and while most Metro North stations have high level platforms, getting off an Amtrak train, in let’s say Plattsburgh (where I get on the Adirondack to NYC) boarding involves a trapdoor, steps and making sure your bag(s) don’t trip you.
