I have wonderful summer memories of this Deli, and the “Ore Pit” literal swimming hole, from the 1980s. Growing up and swimming in this magical place (or at least, I thought it was at the time!) are some of the best highlights of my childhood. I realize this was first published 15 yeas ago, but wanted to thank you for visiting and posting these pictures!

The motto “Failure Is Not An Option” was not fictional. Though the circumstances in the Apollo 13 movie were overly dramatic and unlikely, it was apparently the motto of Kranz’s team.

It is title of Kranz’s excellent biographical memoir of Mission Control which I recommended to all my students. It is also the title of an excellent History Channel adaptation which includes interviews with all of the original controllers.

Thank you for this wonderful history and images. I grew up in Mount Vernon in the 1960s. While it breaks my heart to see yet another example of how corruption and decay have afflicted the city, I still loved reading your post.
